Lesson 5: Indigenous Peoples and Free, Prior and Informed Consent.

The OECD Guidelines prescribe the importance of identifying relevant stakeholders to engage with them. Indigenous communities are often affected by land-related ESG risks, whose livelihoods can depend on their land to harvest food and raise livestock.

This module explains the concept of indigenous peoples, their rights, and how indigenous peoples experience adverse impacts from business activities. It also focuses on one specific right that Indigenous people have, the right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC). Indigenous Peoples have the right to an FPIC process based on art. 10 of the United Nations Declaration on Indigenous Peoples.
